3 Sayyaf terrorists yield in Sulu

SULU - Police are holding three Abu Sayyaf terrorists following their surrender in the southern Philippine province of Sulu.

Police said the trio - Ebin Hapas, 60; Jurim Hapas, 61; and Mujir Aharadhi, 29 - surrendered Monday, January 2, in the capital town of Jolo and are now being held at the Sulu Police Provincial Office.

No other details were made available by the police about the terrorists, except that they were hardened members of the dreaded extremist group whose leaders have pledged allegiance with the Islamic State.

Other reports also said that Jurim was among those who participated in the April 2000 kidnappings of 21 European and Malaysian nationals in the island-resort of Sipadan off Sabah.

Many of the hostages were freed by the Abu Sayyaf months later after Libya, which helped negotiate for their safe release, paid huge ransoms to the kidnappers.

It was unknown whether the trio would be granted amnesty by the government which also offered freedom and provided livelihood aid under the s0-called  "Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program" to other Abu Sayyaf members who surrendered to the government. (Al Jacinto)
