The Coast Guard, quoting Robert Espino, the captain of the ill-fated LCT Pacifica, said the cargo ship was battered by huge waves between Hinatuan Island and Bucas Grande Island and eventually capsized.
Espino said they departed Cabadbaran Port in Agusan del Norte province and were heading to Dapa Port in Surigao del Norte when their ship loaded with sands was battered by waves as high as three meters..
“While underway, they encountered big waves about three meters high that entered the engine room, resulting in engine trouble and steering casualty,” the Coast Guard said, quoting Espino. “While traversing the vicinity waters, MV Veronica sighted the capsized cargo vessel and immediately rescued Espino and his 22 crew members.”
