Man tries to sell military bomb to junk shop

PAGADIAN CITY - Police recovered a 60mm mortar bomb after an unidentified man tried to sell the explosive to a junk shop in the southern Filipino city of Pagadian, officials said Tuesday.

Officials said the junk shop owner Necario Alcano refused to buy the mortar bomb and told the man that it is illegal to sell military ordnance. The man then quickly left the junk shop, leaving behind the high explosive mortar.

Alcano alerted the police about the mortar bomb which was recovered by members of the local Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, according to Maj. Shellamie Chang, a regional police spokeswoman.

It was unknown how the man managed to get hold of the military ordnance which is used against troops either in the open or in foxholes, light vehicles, light bunkers and similar targets.

The Philippine military has not issued a statement on the recovery of the mortar bomb, or whether it is part of their inventory or had been stolen or lost. (Mindanao Examiner)
