ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Philippine Navy rescued dozens of passengers and crewmen of a motor launch after it suffered engine trouble off the southern province of Basilan, officials said Tuesday.

Officials said all passengers and crew members of M/L Sulna were safe and accounted for and brought to Zamboanga City. The boat departed Zamboanga on Monday, February 6, and was heading to Tawi-Tawi’s Taganak Island when its engine malfunctioned. The boat had 11 crew members and was skippered by Cesa Abdul.

“The M/L Sulna departed Zamboanga City and en route to Taganak Island, Tawi-Tawi, when it encountered engine trouble in the seawaters off Favorite Bank in Basilan,” said Rear Admiral Donn Anthony Miraflor, commander of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao.

“The navy vessel immediately proceeded to the location and provided the necessary assistance to the distressed motor launch while the Littoral Monitoring Station Pilas was closely monitoring the conduct of the rescue operation,” he added.

Miraflor said rescuers ferried at least 17 passengers while the boat with other passengers was towed by another motor launch M/L Salamat to Zamboanga. (Mindanao Examiner)
