COTABATO CITY - A Muslim poll official was shot dead on Monday afternoon in an ambush in the town of Lambayong in the southern Philippine province of Sultan Kudarat, according to Catholic radio station Notre Dame Broadcasting Corp.
The report said Haviv Maindan, the municipal poll officer of Maguindanao del Sur’s Sultan sa Barongis, was driving his car and heading home when gunmen attacked him in the village of Pingguiaman
The radio station, quoting Captain Jetro Doligas, the municipal police chief of Lambayong, said Maindan was shot by two motorcycle gunmen. He died on the spot.
Sultan sa Barongis Mayor Allandatu Angas was also saddened by the killing of Maindan, saying the poll official was a dedicated public servant. “We are deeply saddened by the untimely death of our Municipal Election Officer, Haviv Macabangen Maindan,” he said.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the murder and police launched an investigation into the killing to establish the motives and the brains behind the ambush.
The Commission on Elections has yet to issue a statement on the killing of Maindan which occurred ahead of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in October. (Mindanao Examiner)
