ZAMBOANGA CITY – A lone gunman ambushed a group of civilians and killed one of them and wounded three others in Margosatubig town in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, police said Sunday.
Police said the attacker shot and slashed the neck of the 25-year old Paulo Talisayan Paragoya, killing him instantly in the village of Igat. His companions - Edmar Ponce Adecer, 24; Jaime Aligno Garongo, 32; and Roel Calago Sinugbayhan, 37; were also shot and wounded by the gunmen.
Maj. Shellamie Chang, a regional police spokeswoman, said the victims were on a motorcycle taxi and on their way home when the ambush occurred. She said Paragoya’s group just came from a junk shop and bought scrap metals.
“They were waylaid by an unidentified gunman and without any provocation shot the victims several times,” she said, adding, the attacker escaped after the shooting.
“Paulo Paragoya sustained gunshot wounds in his right chest and exited in the back portion of his body and his throat was slashed with a bladed weapon which resulted in his untimely death,” Chang said, quoting a police report.
The motive of the attack is still unknown, but Chang said the police launched an investigation and were hunting the killer. (Mindanao Examiner)
