Trader, wife wounded in gun attack in Zambo Sur

PAGADIAN CITY - Two motorcycle gunmen shot and wounded a trader and his wife in Ramon Magsaysay town in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, police said Friday.

Police said the attackers escaped after shooting the 40-year old Ednald Caluya and his wife in the village of Sinaguing on Thursday. The couple was rushed to the Aisah Hospital here as police mounted an operation to capture the gunmen.

According to Maj. Shellamie Chang, a regional police spokeswoman, said the couple was sitting at a store when the gunmen arrived and asked the trader whether he wanted to buy copra and then shot the duo.

"Investigation disclosed that prior to the incident, the victims were sitting at a store when suddenly, the unidentified suspects riding on a single motorcycle stopped in front of them and asked in Visayan dialect “Mo palit ba mo og copras” but before they could answer, the back rider pulled a handgun and shot the victims several times with the use of caliber .45-caliber  pistol based on the recovered four fired cartridges at the crime scene," she said.

Chang said the trader was shot three times in the body while his wife sustained a gunshot wound in her left waist.

"Immediately after the commission of the crime, the suspects, on board a black Honda Wave, fled the scene and headed to the municipality of Sominot," she said. "PNP personnel of Ramon Magsaysay Municipal Police Station conducted a pursuit operation for the arrest of the fleeing."

She said the police were investigating the motive of the attack. (Mindanao Examiner)
