Cargo ship runs aground in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A cargo ship has run aground on Santa Cruz Island, some three nautical miles from the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga.

The Philippine Coast has confirmed the report on Saturday and said the MV Audie ran aground on Friday while it was navigating the coast of Zamboanga.

The 30-year old vessel, operated by the Visayan Interisland Shipping Corporation, was heading to Leyte province from General Santos City when strong currents pushed the ship to the island.

“The vessel traversing from General Santos City to Leyte ran aground in the said vicinity. According to the Captain, they experienced strong currents that caused them to be dragged aground the location,” the Philippine Coast Guard reported.

It said all the crew members were safe and no oil spill was detected from around the island, which is a protected area.

“Upon inspection of the response team, all crews of the vessel were safe, and no sign of an oil spill was sighted. Further, this district is in close monitoring of the aground vessel for its needed assistance,” the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard did not say whether the vessel was carrying any cargo or the number of crewmen onboard. (Mindanao Examiner)
