ZAMBOANGA CITY – A member of the Philippine Coast Guard was shot dead in the southern port city of Zamboanga in the restive region of Mindanao.
The Philippine Coast Guard made the announcement on Wednesday, June 21, six days after Ensign Genard Santos, a native of Zamboanga City, was murdered. It said Santos was part of the anti-smuggling unit of the Philippine Coast Guard in General Santos City before being deployed here.
It said Santos, 29, was about to ride his motorcycle when shot by a lone gunman in the village of Lower Calarian. It was unclear whether the killing was connected to his work or not. “CG Ensign Santos was working as part of the Coast Guard's anti-smuggling operations in General Santos City before he was transferred to Zamboanga City,” The Philippine Coast Guard said in a statement.
“Based on the investigation, CG
Ensign Santos was about to ride his motorcycle when an unidentified man shot
him. He was brought to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival by
the attending physician,” it added.
No other details were released by the
Philippine Coast Guard on Santos’ murder, but gun attacks are not uncommon in
Zamboanga City due to the presence of hired killers. (Mindanao Examiner)
