Gunman opens fire on civilians, 1 killed, 5 wounded in Basilan province

ZAMBOANGA CITY - A man armed with an automatic rifle opened fire on a group people attending a gathering in the Muslim province of Basilan in Southern Philippines and killed one civilian and wounded five mostly minors.

The attack occurred on Friday evening, June 2, in Lamitan City, the police said. The lone fatality was identified as Amilhassan Asbito, 56. The motive of the attack is still unclear, but police are investigating the shooting at a baptismal gathering.

Witnesses have pointed to the alleged shooter as Arman Misa, who fled the scene after the attack. The wounded - four of them minors - were rushed to hospital, but their condition is unknown.

Gun attacks in Basilan is not uncommon due to the presence of hired killers, rebel groups and the proliferation of illegal weapons. (Mindanao Examiner)
