More improved, modernized BOC systems to be felt in 2 years

THE PUBLIC may enjoy a more responsive, cohesive and modernized system from the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in the next two years, a Customs official assured Thursday.

"Makakaasa po ang ating mga kababayan na in a matter of time na lang, siguro in a matter of two years, magkakaroon tayo ng mas improved, mas transparent, at mas fully digital na custom systems (We assure our countrymen that in a matter of time, hopefully in a matter of two years, we will have a more improved, more transparent, and more fully digital custom systems)," BOC Assistant Commissioner spokesperson Vincent Philip Maronilla said during the Laging Handa public briefing.

He said the procurement process for advanced systems has been ongoing in line with the efforts of the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to push for digitalization across government agencies.

Maronilla said the BOC is coordinating with the World Bank (WB) to discuss new timelines and requirements for the Philippine Customs Modernization program.

He said representatives from the WB has been in the Philippines for the past two weeks to conduct a midterm review, including the review of the bureau’s digitalization efforts which is now pegged at 98 percent.

He added the BOC’s digitalization efforts have helped the country to streamline its "customs procedures, enhanced trade operations, and improved processing times and accuracy in import and export transactions."

Earlier, the World Bank Performance Index ranked the Philippines 43rd among 139 nations for advanced trade facilitation. (Stephanie Sevillano)
