PNP assures security for FIBA World Cup 2023 this August

THE PHILIPPINE National Police is fully prepared to secure the country’s hosting of the 19th Edition of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Basketball World Cup 2023 this August, PNP chief Gen. Benjamin C. Acorda Jr. said Thursday.

In a statement, Acorda said the PNP will implement its tried and tested major events security framework to secure international and famous basketball athletes that will participate in the basketball world cup.

He said the event is not something new for the police force, and such security strategy was proven effective in successful international events such as the 2015 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, 2015 Papal Visit, 2017 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, and the 2020 Miss Universe Pageant.

“The PNP is fully committed to the success of this prestigious international event. We are working closely with our partner agencies to deliver a memorable experience for everyone involved,” he added, as he assured the prioritization of the safety and security of all participants, officials and spectators.

He said the Security Task Force (STF) FBWC 2023 has been organized as the primary body responsible for conducting security operations and other related public safety services during the basketball event.

Meanwhile, the chief of the Public Information Office, Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, emphasized the importance of collaboration and vigilance during the event.

"The 19th FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 presents an exciting opportunity for our country to showcase its hospitality and love for sports. As the head spokesperson for the STF FBWC 2023, I assure everyone that we are committed to providing timely and accurate information regarding the security measures implemented,” he said.

With security and safety at stake, the PNP is inviting the public to support their efforts and remain vigilant throughout the duration of the 19th FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

“We encourage the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all," Maranan said.

The FBWC 2023 tips off on Aug. 25 and ends Sept. 10.

The 19th Edition of FIBA's flagship event will be hosted across three nations in Asia: the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. The Philippines will specifically host participants from Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe.

To kick off the tournament, the opening ceremony and opening games between Angola vs. Italy, and Philippines vs. Dominican Republic, will be held at the Philippine Arena in Ciudad de Victoria, Sta. Maria, Bulacan. (Christopher Lloyd Caliwan)
