The Coast Guard said the ML Lady Radia, manned by eight crew men, was sailing to Baluk-Baluk Island from the village of Rio Hondo on Thursday evening, July 6, when the fire broke out. It was carrying 100 liters of gasoline and other essential goods.
Crew members managed to turn back the boat to the coastal village where the Coast Guard rescued them.
“The crew said a short circuit occurred while underway to the island which eventually caused a fire onboard,” the Coast Guard reported, quoting one of the crewmen.
“Five injured victims — one with third-degree burns; two with second-degree burns, and two with minor burns — were taken to the Zamboanga City Medical Center for immediate medical treatment.
Other crew members were rescued and declared in good physical condition,” it added.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze four hours later. (Mindanao Examiner)
