Boy dead, 5 others hospitalized for food poisoning

ZAMBOANGA CITY - A boy was killed and five of his siblings were rushed to hospital after consuming expired grocery goods they found at a garbage dump in the southern Philippine city of Zamboanga.

The boy's father Jerry Sumolang said his 11-year old son died after feasting on assorted canned goods, including various snacks. The expired goods were dumped by a truck in the village of Patalon. "Sumuka at dumumi pa yun anak ko bago namatay. Kinain nila yun mga napulot nila sa basurahan. Yun ibang mga kapatid niya na-ospital rin," he said.

The father said a truck dumped all those expired goods, including spices, at the village last week and children in their community brought them home. The boy's father also admitted that he ate some of the canned goods, but only his children were poisoned by it. Other villagers who consumed the expired products reported having diarrhea and were also brought to hospital for medical observation, according to health workers.

The Department of Health dispatched a team and inspected the garbage dump and found many expired grocery items from powdered fruit juice drinks to cans of beef loaf, and even boxes of powdered milk, among others.

Social workers have reached out to the family to assist them. Police were also investigating who was behind the dumping of the expired goods. (Mindanao Examiner)
