Navy seizes boat loaded with fuel in Southern Philippines

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Philippine authorities seized a boat illegally transporting 250 drums of diesel fuel off Tawi-Tawi province near the Malaysian border of Sabah.

Photos released by the Philippine Navy show the seized diesel fuel and crewmen of the boat MB Annabel.

This was confirmed Saturday by the Philippine Navy, saying the boat MB Annabel was apprehended by patrol ships near Panglima Sugala town on Friday. It said the boat, manned by 11 Filipino crew members, was carrying some 50,000 liters of fuel worth over P3 million.

"The MB Anabel, its crew, and the seized items were thereafter escorted to Bongao Pier in Tawi-Tawi, and were subsequently turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Customs Tawi-Tawi for appropriate disposition," the Naval Forces Western Mindanao said.

It also released photos of the apprehension, saying "the successful operation serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment of the various government agencies to safeguarding our maritime borders and ensuring the integrity of our nation's trade and security. "

The Naval Forces Western Mindanao did not identify the owner of the contraband or whether the fuel was sneaked into the province from Sabah, but smuggling of Malaysian petroleum products and cigarettes are rampant in the South. (Mindanao Examiner)
