PAGADIAN CITY - The Philippine Coast said Tuesday it rescued 13 crew members, including its skipper, after their cargo vessel tilted on its port side while sailing on bad weather.

The vessel, M/V Star Sabang, was loaded with 170 tons of cement and heading to Zamboanga from Cebu province when it suddenly tilted on the left side off Bayangan Island off Labason town in Zamboanga del Norte, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.
It said the incident occurred on Monday but there was no report of casualties. “The Philippine Coast Guard has responded to a maritime incident involving M/V Star Sabang which accidentally tilted due to heavy weather conditions in the vicinity waters off Bayangan Island, Zamboanga del Norte on 15 January 2024,” it said.
The vessel’s skipper Zamcebar Cutaran phoned the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) in Salug town to report the incident after waters flooded the ship.
“Immediately, the CGSS Salug quick response team proceeded to Labason town to coordinate with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office for the rescue operation. A total of 13 distressed crew were successfully rescued and brought safely to Bayangan Island,” the Philippine Coast Guard said.
