‘Manlilikha ng Bayan’ awardee is ‘Pride of Bangsamoro’

TAWI-TAWI – Dancing at a young age, Hadja Sakinur-ain Mugong Delasas has mastered the art of “Igal,” a Sama term for “dance” and is tantamount to the “Pangalay” of Sulu’s Tausug, the Pamansak and Gandingan of the Yakan in Basilan province in southern Philippines.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCAA) said Hadja Sakinur-ain, a native of Tawi-Tawi, is regarded by her community as the “Danda Pandey Ngigal” (Igal expert).

“She learned so much of her dance skills from her mother who taught her gestures mimicking the ocean water, fishes, and birds. She is known for spreading her expertise in the art performances where she emphasizes the need to keep all elements of the dancer and the dance in harmony,” the NCAA said.

“It happens right when the dancer is one with her soul and spirit, as guided by the traditional ‘tagunggu’ music,” NCAA quoted Hadja Sakinur-ain, as saying.

The NCAA said Hadja Sakinur-ain has been dancing in time with the past, against the crosscurrents of the present, to the challenging irrepressible tides of the future as she relentlessly dances the Igal for her omboh, her great ancestors, her family, her Sama community, her Igal students and the next generations of Igal dancers.

Last month, Bangsamoro lawmakers Amilbahar Mawallil and Rasol Mitmug Jr filed a resolution honoring Hadja Sakinur-ain as one of the recipients of the “2023 Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan as a Sama master of traditional dance for her distinctive mastery and commitment to safeguarding and promoting the Sama Igal tradition, commending her extraordinary contributions to the Bangsamoro Culture and Arts.

The resolution filed on December 22 was also co-authored by MPs Laisa Alamina, Baintan Ampatuan, Don Mustapha Loong, Suharto Ambolodto abd Rasul Ismael. (Mindanao Examiner)
