Navy tows boat, rescues 120 passengers off Basilan

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Philippine Navy rescued at least 120 passengers from a motor launch off the southern province of Basilan after the vessel’s engine malfunctioned while on its way here.

Photos released by the Naval Forces Western Mindanao show the rescue operation off Basilan province.

The vessel, MB Den Russel, which originated from Sulu province, made a distress call on Tuesday, according to the Rear Admiral Donn Anthony Miraflor, commander of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM).

“NFWM responded quickly to the distress call and deployed its naval transport vessel BRP Ivatan (LC 298), which arrived at noon in the vicinity of Lampinigan Island, Basilan Province and immediately assisted the troubled MB. Due to unfavorable weather conditions and for the safety of the passengers, the MB was towed immediately en route to Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in Zamboanga City,” he said.

Miraflor said the vessel’s crew members managed to repair the boat's main engine and upon arrival at Ensign Majini Pier, the vessel immediately proceeded to a pier in Lower Calarian village where all the passengers safely disembarked. (Al Jacinto)
