Storm surge hit Zambo village

ZAMBOANGA CITY – One villager was injured after a storm surge swept through dozens of houses, mostly on stilts, in the Filipino port city of Zamboanga, the local government said.

Photos released by the Zamboanga City government show the aftermath of the storm surge in the village of Manicahan.

It said the storm surge struck the village of Manicahan late Sunday when most of the residents were resting or asleep. At least 80 houses were damaged or partially destroyed from the storm surge.

Social workers were sent to the area to provide the necessary assistance to the affected families.

storm surge is a rise in sea level that occurs during tropical cyclones, intense storms also known as typhoons. The storms produce strong winds that push the water into shore, which can lead to flooding. This makes storm surges very dangerous for coastal regions. (Mindanao Examiner)
