Navy seizes P64-M smuggled cigarettes in Tawi-Tawi

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Philippine Navy on Sunday announced the seizure of some P64 million worth of smuggled cigarettes off Simunul Island in the southern Muslim province of Tawi-Tawi.

It said the patrol boat BRP Jose Loor Sr (PC 390) intercepted the M/L Yasmen while transporting the contraband.

“The PC390 while patrolling its area of operations, intercepted the vessel and swiftly moved to investigate the suspicious cargo. Upon inspection, it was revealed that M/L Yasmen was laden with a cache of undocumented tobacco goods.  The estimated market value of these confiscated goods stands at an astonishing P64 million,” said Rear Admiral Donn Anthony Miraflor, chief of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao.

Miraflor said the contraband was handed over to the Bureau of Customs in Bongao town in Tawi-Tawi province. “This successful operation underscores the Philippine Navy's unwavering commitment to safeguard the nation’s borders and combat illegal activities, including smuggling that undermines national security and economic integrity,” he said.

As in the past operations, the Philippine Navy and the Bureau of Customs did not identify the owner or consignee of the smuggled cigarettes for unknown reasons. (Mindanao Examiner)
