ZAMBOANGA CITY - Motorcycle gunmen evading a security inspection at a checkpoint shot dead a policeman in Lamitan City in the southern Muslim province of Basilan.
Pat. Khalid Sali Ahmad who tried to stop the duo was gunned down by one of the suspects in the village of Colonia on Tuesday evening. The slain cop was a member of the 1st Basilan Provincial Mobile Force Company manning the checkpoint.
“Pat. Ahmad, who at that time took pictures of the on-going checkpoint, tried to stop and hold the evading motorcycle, but the back rider shot him, hitting his left eye with the bullet exited to the back of his head. The suspects still managed to escape as they sped towards the village of Campo Uno,” said Richard Falcatan, the provincial government spokesman.
He said Ahmad was rushed to the Lamitan District Hospital but declared dead on arrival. “Two spent shells of a .45-caliber pistol were recovered at the scene,” said Falcatan.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the killing of Ahmad, but gun attacks are not uncommon in the province due to the presence of hired killers, rebel groups and the proliferation of illegal weapons. (Mindanao Examiner)
