Cebu Pacific installs lightning shelters at NAIA

TO BETTER ensure the safety of ramp workers, low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific (CEB) has installed lightning shelters at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, where the airline operates the majority of its flights.

On Thursday, CEB announced that two units were installed at the remote parking bay, and one at Ramp 2. Two more units will be installed within the month.

CEB said they chose to install these in locations that could provide quick access to aircraft once red lightning alerts are cleared.

"Consistently ensuring safety and expressing care for our stakeholders has always been Cebu Pacific's top priority," CEB Vice President for Customer Services Operations Lei Apostol said in a statement.

Having these shelters, she said, would also enable the airline to recover from flight delays faster.

CEB also provided ramp workers with wireless headsets to better ensure their safety from lightning.

Red lightning alerts are being issued by airport authorities to prevent any untoward incident when lightning is prevalent in the immediate area that could endanger passengers and personnel.

In 2019, a ground crew at NAIA was hurt after lightning struck near where he was standing. (Ma. Cristina Arayata)
