COTABATO CITY – Ahod Ebrahim, chieftain of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and now the Chief Minister of the Bangsamoro autonomous region, remains silent over the spate of deadly attacks by pro-Islamic State fighters on MILF targets in the southern Philippines.
Just this month, gunmen killed four former
MILF soldiers in an ambush in the Muslim province of Maguindanao del Sur. The
MILF men were travelling in two motorcycles in Shariff Aguak town when alleged
members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters attacked them with automatic
weapons.
Police have launched an investigation into the ambush, but
this was not the first time pro-IS fighters - including the Dawlah Islamiya -
attacked rival MILF forces.
Local IS fighters have declared a
total war with the MILF, which signed a peace deal with Manila in 2014,
after branding the former secessionist rebel group as "apostate Moro
militia" and launched random, but deadly attacks on the MILF the past
years in Maguindanao, a major stronghold of the MILF.
Ebrahim has also not released any
statement even in previous attacks against his forces in the South. (Mindanao
