Luzon grid on red, yellow alerts on Tuesday

THE NATIONAL Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) declared red and yellow alerts in the Luzon grid on Tuesday after 19 power plants went on forced outage.

The NGCP said there would be a red alert over the Luzon grid from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Rotational brownouts are implemented during a red alert status.

On the other hand, a yellow alert is declared from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

“Nineteen power plants are on forced outage, while three others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 2,117.3 megawatts (MW) unavailable to the grid,” the NGCP said.

Peak electricity demand for the day in the Luzon grid is expected at 13,024 MW, with only an available capacity of 13,537 MW.

“A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement,” the NGCP said.

“A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.”

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco), meanwhile, said it has advised its Interruptible Load Program (ILP) participants of a possible de-loading amid the yellow and red alert status.

“We are ready in the event the implementation of manual load dropping or rotating power interruptions will be needed as part of our responsibility to manage the system,” Meralco said. (Kris Crismundo)
