UP Law students’ win in int’l tilt proof of quality PH legal education

SENATOR SONNY Angara on Monday lauded the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law for winning the 2024 Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition, saying the victory showed the high quality of the country’s legal education.

In a statement, Angara said the success of the UP Law Jessup Team is a demonstration of the skill and mettle of Filipino law students.

The international rounds took place in Washington, D.C., United States on March 30 to April 6.

“Winning the Jessup Moot Court Competition is no small task. A total of 642 teams from 100 countries took part in the event and they include the best law schools in the world. Being a product of the UP College of Law myself, their victory fills me with so much pride,” he said.

“The consistently strong performance of the Philippines in these moot court exercises is a clear testament to the quality of our legal education. We must continue to foster academic excellence, not only in the field of law, but also in other disciplines,” Angara added, noting that this is the third time that the Philippines won in the prestigious competition.

The lawmaker said he will file a Senate resolution to recognize the UP College of Law Jessup Team for its feat.

The team is composed of Mary Regine Dadole, Pauline De Leon, Pauline Samantha Sagayo, Chinzen Viernes, and Ignacio Lorenzo Villareal, and coached by UP Law professor Marianne Vitug and faculty advisor Professor Rommel Casis.

Ignacio Lorenzo Villareal was named the Best Oralist in the championship round. (Wilnard Bacelonia)
