THE PHILIPPINE Coast Guard (PCG) on Wednesday deployed several teams for search and rescue (SAR) operations amid floods in the National Capital Region (NCR) brought by Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat).
In a situation report, the PCG said comprehensive SAR operations were deployed in Mandaluyong City, San Juan City, Marikina City, Sta. Mesa, and other parts of NCR.
Foot patrols were made along the entire stretch of Pasig River to monitor water levels and ensure rapid response to any emergencies —especially in the cities of San Juan and Marikina.
“These efforts are aimed at mitigating risks and providing timely assistance to affected communities, ensuring their safety and preparedness during the rainy season,” it said.
To date, seven teams from the PCG District NCR –Central Luzon, PCG Special Maritime, and PSC have rescued a total of 1,356 individuals comprising 433 families.
“The rescue teams worked tirelessly under challenging conditions to evacuate residents from flooded and hazardous areas. Their coordinated efforts together with the local DRRMOs (Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Office) encompassing Metro Manila areas ensured that those affected by the storm received prompt and effective assistance,” it said.
No casualties have yet been reported.
Earlier, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority reported that flooding in major NCR roads was gutter-deep to chest-high, rendering them impassable to motorists.
Some parts of Metro Manila have reported floods as high as one-story buildings, with some residents spotted waiting for rescue on roofs. (Raymond Carl Dela Cruz)
