GSIS offers emergency loan for dengue-hit E. Visayas areas

MEMBERS AND pensioners of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) in Eastern Visayas who are affected by the dengue outbreak can now apply for emergency loan.

This, after the state workers’ pension fund announced on Friday that it has allotted PHP1.5 billion that will be accessible for its 34,739 members and pensioners in various provinces of the region.

"The emergency loan program intends to provide immediate financial assistance to Samar and Leyte (Ormoc City, Maasin City, and Municipality of Kananga) who may be faced with unexpected medical expenses, loss of income due to illness, among others," GSIS said in a press release.

The amount allocated is over and above the PHP27 billion apportioned for more than 1.2 million calamity-affected members and pensioners across 23 calamity-declared areas affected by the southwest monsoon, Typhoon Carina and Severe Tropical Storm Enteng, as well as the African swine fever, it added.

Active members and pensioners in calamity-declared areas can apply for an emergency loan from the GSIS if they meet certain criteria, such as having a net take-home pay of at least PHP5,000 and no pending legal cases.

The maximum loan amount is PHP40,000 for those with existing emergency loan balances and PHP20,000 for those without.

Old-age and disability pensioners must have at least 25 percent of their pension remaining after deductions for loan amortization.

The loan also offers a low interest rate of 6 percent per annum, with a repayment period of three years.

Members and pensioners can apply for the loan online through the GSIS Touch mobile app or at GSIS branches and select government offices nationwide. (Wilnard Bacelonia)
