THE COMMUNIST insurgents' desire to only wreak havoc and violence was highlighted by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF)'s declaration that there will be no holiday truce, National Security Adviser (NSA) Eduardo Año said on Thursday.
"(This) simply reflects their persistent commitment to violence and armed struggle, further isolating themselves from the Filipino people’s aspirations for peace and security," he said in a statement.
Año, however, said this declaration of the communist insurgents is an "empty declaration" as they have now been reduced to a single weakened guerrilla front.
Such reduction already makes them incapable of launching major operations against security forces or recruiting new members, he added.
"This dramatic decline is the result of sustained government efforts under the banner of NTF- ELCAC (National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict) and supported by communities to neutralize insurgency and foster inclusive development," Año said.
He also stressed that peace-building requires sincerity and the CPP-NPA-NDF’s actions have consistently demonstrated a lack of sincerity and commitment to peace.
"We call on the Filipino people to unite in rejecting violence and supporting programs that promote peace and development. No ideology rooted in violence and armed struggle will be allowed to threaten the progress and aspirations of the Filipino people," he said.
He added that government will continue focused military operations to destroy CPP-NPA-NDF remnants so the Filipino people can enjoy a peaceful and orderly holiday season this December. (Priam Nepomuceno/PNA)
