4 Davao Occidental towns now first-class

DAVAO CITY – Davao Occidental announced Thursday that two towns retained their first-class municipality status and two others were reclassified as first-class.

The provincial government said Malita and Jose Abad Santos retained their status, while Don Marcelino and Santa Maria were elevated to first-class.

Santa Maria and Don Marcelino were previously second- and third-class municipalities, respectively.

The reclassification was effective Jan. 1, according to Department Order No. 074, Series of 2024, from the Department of Finance (DOF). The order is based on Republic Act 11964, the Automatic Income Classification of Local Government Units Act.

According to the DOF, provinces, cities, and municipalities are classified into five classes based on their average annual regular income for the three preceding fiscal years.

The income classification for municipalities is: first-class, PHP200 million or more; second, PHP160 million to less than PHP200 million; third, PHP130 million to less than PHP160 million; fourth, PHP90 million to less than PHP130 million; and fifth, less than PHP90 million.

The number of fifth-class municipalities decreased from nine last year to one this year.

Davao Occidental, which was fourth in income classification last year, is now second.

In Region 11, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, and Davao del Sur retained their first-class province status. (Che Palicte)
