Largest EV charging hub to accelerate shift to greener logistics

ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) logistics company Mober launched Central Charge on Monday, the largest commercial EV charging hub in the Philippines, marking a major step toward sustainable transport.

As a leader in green logistics, Mober aims to position the country at the forefront of sustainable logistics in Southeast Asia, aligning with the mandates of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA).

In his speech, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, author of EVIDA, underscored the importance of accessible charging infrastructure for widespread EV adoption.

He said utilities must upgrade technology and infrastructure to ensure a reliable power supply for EVs.

"To push EVs in the country, we need to make sure that there is electricity. In order to have electricity to be used by EVs, we need the utilities to be on board. [It] should upgrade the infrastructure, technology and make sure that there is charging stations in the country," Gatchalian said.

He also highlighted the Department of Energy’s (DOE) role in overseeing EV policies.

For his part, Mober founder and chief executive officer Dennis Ng revealed that the 3,000-square-meter state-of-the-art facility at HK Sun Plaza in Pasay City will house 50 units of seven-kilowatts (kW) direct current (DC) chargers and five units of 60-kW fast chargers.

Ng also announced plans to expand with two additional EV charging hubs - Northern Volt in the north and Southern Spark in the south - on properties ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 square meters.

These hubs aim to empower small truckers by providing access to EV charging infrastructure and rental services, potentially benefiting 500,000 small trucking businesses.

"[We are] actively planning and looking for suitable 6,000-10,000 sq.m. property to establish 2 additional EV charging hubs. These new facilities, which will be named Northern Volt in the north and Southern Spark in the south, will not only house logistics network but also support our expansion ambition. Most importantly, these hubs will empower small truckers," Ng said.

The Central Charge facility can accommodate mixed fleets of e-vans and e-trucks, charging up to 200 EV trucks daily.

Its strategic location near commercial hubs ensures efficient mid- and last-mile deliveries for major clients, including IKEA, Nestlé Philippines, and Maersk.

Mober is targeting to scale its fleet to over 500 EVs by 2026 following the inauguration of its first charging hub in 2023 which spanned 800 square meters and had 30 charging units.

The company is also exploring the integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and a 500-kWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to further reduce its carbon footprint.

As Southeast Asia’s largest EV delivery operator, Mober continues to lead the region in green logistics solutions. (Pot Chavez)
