THE COMMISSION on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) has welcomed the recognition of University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) degrees by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
In an interview on Wednesday, CFO Secretary Dante Ang II underscored the importance of this equivalency recognition as it would pave the way for better opportunities for Filipinos abroad.
“Equivalency is a big help for Filipino professionals working abroad. That allows them to practice their trade and get the same recognition that they enjoy here in the Philippines,” Ang said.
He said the CFO would reach out to Filipinos based in the Gulf state to encourage them to grab the opportunities to get a degree or take further studies, and expand their career opportunities and professional growth.
Ang said the CFO has been forging many partnerships with various stakeholders from the public and private sectors, and that the agency would also reach out to the UPOU soon.
Prior to the accreditation, OFWs with UPOU degrees reportedly faced challenges in career advancement as their academic credentials were not recognized in the UAE.
The new recognition ensures that UPOU graduates can now apply for better jobs and professional licenses, significantly improving their economic prospects.
UP President Angelo Jimenez said the move reinforces UP’s role in empowering Filipinos worldwide with a lasting impact.
“This development will have a profound impact on the professional and economic mobility of our OFWs, enabling them to transition from high-risk, low-paying jobs to safer, more stable, and higher-income positions,” Jimenez said.
