ZAMBOANGA CITY - President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. on Monday inaugurated the first Walang Gutom Kitchen (WGK) in Mindanao, marking another milestone in the government’s nationwide campaign to expand access to nutritious food and reduce involuntary hunger among vulnerable Filipinos.
Joined by Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian, the President led the opening of the facility, which is expected to serve up to 300 walk-in beneficiaries daily, including individuals, families, and people experiencing homelessness.
Operated under the DSWD’s Pag-Abot Program, the Walang Gutom Kitchen provides free, nutritious meals to eligible beneficiaries. Breakfast is served beginning at 6 a.m., while lunch becomes available at 11 a.m. Beneficiaries may register onsite and receive a WGK identification card with a QR code to facilitate access to meal services.
Zamboanga City’s WGK facility is the first of its kind in Mindanao. It is part of the Marcos administration’s efforts to strengthen food security and ensure vulnerable sectors have access to safe and nutritious meals.
President Marcos has directed the establishment of 12 Walang Gutom Kitchens nationwide, prioritizing areas with a high incidence of hunger. The initiative complements the administration’s ongoing interventions to help address food insecurity through targeted social protection programs.
The Walang Gutom Kitchen serves as both a feeding facility and a community support center, reflecting the government’s commitment to delivering immediate assistance while advancing long-term measures to combat hunger and improve the well-being of underserved communities. (MLE/JPA/PIA RO9/PR)
