ZAMBOANGA CITY – Philippine authorities are
holding a municipal mayor from the Muslim province of Basilan in the autonomous
region in Mindanao who is accused of rebellion while attempting to flee the
country.
Jamar Mansul, of Hadji Muhtamad town, was
apprehended by Filipino agents at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on
Monday. Mansul was supposed to take a flight for Malaysia when members of the
National Bureau of Investigation arrested him.
The politician among hundreds of names of
personalities included in the so-called watch list issued by the Department of
Defense following the declaration of martial law in the restive region.
It was unclear whether Mansul took part in any rebel
fighting against the Duterte government in Basilan or Mindanao. The mayor did
not issue any statement.
The governor of Basilan, Hadjiman Saliman, also
did not give a statement on the arrest of his mayor. It was
unknown why Mansul was never arrested in Basilan or at the pier or airport in
Zamboanga City on his way to Manila. (Mindanao Examiner)
