MALACAÑANG ON Monday downplayed reports suggesting potential unrest in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) after a change in the region's top leadership.
In a press briefing, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro allayed fears of possible instability after the announcement that Maguindanao Del Norte Governor Abdulraof Macacua replaced Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Chair Ahod Ebrahim as the region's interim chief minister.
“Sa kasalukuyan po, wala po tayong nakikitang anumang maaaring maging dahilan para magkagulo kung magkakaroon man ng transfer of power sa BARMM (Currently, we do not see anything that could cause trouble if there is a transfer of power to BARMM),” Castro said.
“At ang katauhan po nitong si Chief Ahod Ebrahim, isa po siya sa proponent of peace process. So, hindi po natin nakikita sa katauhan po ni Chief Ebrahim na ganoon po ang mangyayari (And Chief Ahod Ebrahim is one of the proponents of the peace process. So, we don't see that happening based on Chief Ebrahim’s personality),” she added.
However, Castro declined to comment when asked about the reason for the replacement of Ebrahim as BARMM chief minister.
Ebrahim has led the BARMM since its transition government was established in 2019.
The development came following the national government’s move to postpone the BARMM’s first parliamentary elections from May to October. (Darryl John Esguerra)
