Hokkaido man accused of murder arrested in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A Japanese man is being held by Philippine authorities after he was implicated in the murder of his Filipina wife last year in the southern port city of Zamboanga, officials said Thursday.

Officials said the 73-year Hokkaido man, Kiyoshi Niida, was ordered arrested by a local court for allegedly ordering the killing of Majen Curambao who was shot by suspected guns-for-hire.

Niida was arrested inside his rented house in the village of Guiwan. He did not resist arrest and also declined to give any statement to journalist.

Officials said the police are still hunting down others involved in the murder. Niida is currently detained at a police jail along with other Filipino prisoners. The court did not grant any bail for Niida’s temporary liberty.

Police did not say how it broke the murder case which implicated the septuagenarian man to the killing nor did it provide journalist with details or background of Niida.

But Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, a regional police spokeswoman, said Niida’s capture came after Judge Shaldilyn Bangsaja, of the Regional Trial Court Branch 33, issued an arresy warrant for the Japanese man. “No bail bond recommended,” she said.

It was unknown if the Japanese embassy was informed of Niida’s arrest. The Japanese man has been living in Zamboanga for a number of years now. (Mindanao Examiner)
