Restoring Peace in Bubuan Island Through Dialogue and Medical Outreach

BASILAN - On December 2, 2024, a simultaneous medical outreach program was held in the remote communities of Lakit, Barangay Suligan, and Landing, Barangay Babag, in Tabuan-Lasa, Basilan. This initiative took place amidst the threat of escalating clan conflicts, or "rido," but was marked by a peaceful dialogue facilitated by the local government unit (LGU) of Tabuan-Lasa, led by Mayor Hon. Moner H. Manisan, in partnership with the 15th Special Forces Company under Captain Dann Mar Palma. This dialogue played a crucial role in restoring peace and paving the way for healing in these conflict-affected areas.

The outreach program focused on addressing both the physical and emotional needs of the community, providing essential healthcare services such as medical and dental check-ups, the distribution of medicines, circumcision services, feeding programs, haircuts, and gift-giving. The program was supported by volunteers from the Philippines General Council of the Assemblies of God (PGCAG), who traveled from as far as Pangasinan, and worked alongside the Basilan Provincial Health Office, the Rural Health Unit (RHU) of Tabuan-Lasa, and other partner organizations.

This initiative not only provided much-needed medical assistance but also promoted unity and cultural healing, uplifting the spirits of the local communities. The involvement of organizations like Soap Cycling Philippines, Share Your Spare Singapore, and The Climbing Puppeteer and Friends helped ensure the success of the program, which became a symbol of hope, especially for MNLF (Moro National Liberation Front) communities.

More than just a healthcare mission, the program highlighted the power of collaboration and compassion, proving that healing extends far beyond medical care. It emphasized the importance of peacebuilding, trust, and the pursuit of a brighter future. The success of this outreach serves as a testament to the transformative impact of unity and collective action, showing that even in the most remote and conflict-prone areas, meaningful change is possible.
