ZAMBOANGA CITY – A lone gunman shot dead a village official in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said Sunday.
Police said Michael Magallanes, who was elected council man in the recent elections, just came out from his house in Santa Catalina when the gunman attacked him. He was shot at least 5 times.
The attacker escaped after shooting and police said it launched an investigation into the murder of the 38-year old politician. Magallanes’ family did not issue any statement and it was not immediately known whether the victim had been receiving death threats or if the killing was political or not.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the murder, but gun attacks are not uncommon in Zamboanga City where hired killers are actively operating. (Mindanao Examiner)
