PRESIDENT RODRIGO Duterte lauded Russia's efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine and is willing to participate in trials, as he welcomed a supply offer from Moscow that he expects will be free of charge.
Russia said it expects regulatory approval for a potential Covid-19 vaccine this month and is ready to provide it to the Philippines, or team up with a local firm to mass produce it.
The Philippines has among Asia's highest numbers of coronavirus infections with over 60,000 active cases since the start of the pandemic in March.
“Maligaya ako. Ang Russia kaibigan natin. Magbigay sila ng bakuna. Wala silang sinasabi na bayaran. Tulong ni President (Vladimir) Putin ito. Libre. Tinatanggap natin. Kung ilan ang supply at kelangan natin, pag usapan. May clinical studies,” Duterte said.
Duterte said he will even volunteer to receive the first shot of vaccine during the trials in the Philippines. “Ako, pagdating ng bakuna, in public, para walang tsatstat diyan, ako mauna,” he said, adding, “We are extremely grateful to Russia. In the fullness of God’s time, hopefully, we will have a Covid-free December.”
He also thanked Putin for his promise to provide Manila with the trial vaccine. “Galing sa puso ko, nagpapasalamat ako sa loob ninyo sa Pilipino. Someday, makabayad kami sa utang na loob sa inyo. I promise, the Philippines and Russia will remain friends forever.
Russia, salamat po,” Duterte said.
