DAVAO CITY – Police on
Friday announced the arrest of a senior Abu Sayyaf leader who was in the group
of former rebel chieftain Nur Misuari in Davao City in southern Philippines.
Philippine police chief General
Archie Gamboa made the announcement Misuari handed over Idang Susukan, whose
pro-ISIS terror group is behind the series of cross-border kidnappings in Sabah
and gruesome attacks on soldiers and beheading of civilians.
Susukan surrendered to Misuari,
chairman of the Moro National Liberation Front, in April in Sulu province.
Misuari brought Susukan in
Davao City to have him fitted with a prosthetic replacement for his left arm,
which he lost during a battle with security forces in Sulu province last year,
according to an exclusive report by Malaysia’s The Star newspaper.
Gamboa said Misuari handed over
Susukan to authorities following a negotiation. Susukan was staying in Misuari’s
house at YƱigue Subdivision in the
village of Maa when police took custody of the terror leader.
“We thank Chairman Nur Misuari for facilitating the
negotiation between the PNP headed by Colonel Kirby John Kraft, Davao City
Director and Idang Susukan,” he said, adding, the police negotiated with
Misuari to surrender Susukan after confirming his presence there.
Gamboa said the police also informed presidential
daughter and mayor of Davao, Sara Carpio, on the negotiation. “The PNP
immediately advised Mayor Inday Sara Duterte who assured us of her full
cooperation and assistance, to ensure the peaceful handover and orderly
transfer of custody to proper authorities,” he said.
Susukan is facing dozens of criminal cases, mostly
murder and kidnappings, according to Gamboa.
The Star reported that Susukan
had been involved in ransom kidnappings in Sabah since 2013 and among his
victims were Chinese national Gao Huayun and
Filipina Marcy Darawan, who were abducted at Singamata Reef Resort in Semporna
waters on April 2, 2014.
And Malaysian Chan Sai Chun, who was snatched from
his fish farm in Kampung Sapang in Kunak on June 16, 2014, including Sabah
restaurateur Thien Nyuk Fan, who were kidnapped from Ocean King Seafood
Restaurant in Sandakan on May 14, 2015.
Singapore’s Asia One reported
that Susukan was the key kidnapper and executioner of the 39-year old Malaysian
engineer Bernard Then, who was beheaded in November 2015. It also said that
Susukan is under the refuge of the MNLF.
Misuari did not issue any
statement on Susukan’s arrest. (Mindanao Examiner)
