POLICE OFFICERS seized a number of high-powered firearms and ammunition in a clash with communist terrorist group members in Samar on Tuesday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Wednesday.
PNP chief, Gen. Debold Sinas said the members of the Special Action Force's (SAF) 123rd Special Action Company seized the weapons following a firefight with an undetermined number of communist terrorists engaged in extortion activities in the mountainous part of Barangay Salvacion, Calbayog City, Samar at around 11:35 a.m. Tuesday.
Recovered from the encounter site were one M-16 Elisco automatic rifle with defaced serial number; an improvised homemade double zero shotgun; two long steel and one short M-16 magazines; one KG-9 magazine; one silencer suppressor; one chest rig; 35 5.56-mm rounds, eight KG-9 bullets, and three 12-gauge shotgun ammunition.
“The communist terrorists do not show any respect for the sacredness of the Holy Week and will continue with their unchristian criminal activities,” Sinas added.
There were no casualties among government troops while there were undetermined casualties on the part of the New People's Army (NPA) terrorists.
Sinas said pursuing troops are now moving to their next target together with the recovered items.
“The PNP is duty-bound to protect the Filipino people and the country from the relentless terror plots of the communist groups. We will continue to hunt them down and we will never tolerate their utter disregard of the rule of law,” he added.
The Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army is also listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines. (By Priam Nepomuceno)
