ZAMBOANGA CITY – Security forces captured an Abu Sayyaf supporter in his hideout following an intensive surveillance operation in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga.
Military photos released to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner show Abu Sayyaf supporter Merham Tulawi Nasalun and his weapon following his capture in Zamboanga City.
Army
Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., chief of the Western Mindanao Command, said
policemen, backed by soldiers, tracked down Merham Tulawi Nasalun in the remote
village of Muti.
He
said security forces also seized a .45-caliber pistol with 7 bullets and a magazine
for M16 automatic rifle with 17 rounds, and several identification cards from
the 22-year old Nasalun. The Monday operation was covered by a search warrant,
according to Vinluan.
It
was not immediately known whether Nasalun or his pro-ISIS group was planning a
terror attack here.
Dozens
of Abu Sayyaf fighters had been captured in Zamboanga City in the past years
after escaping military operations in Basilan and Sulu, two of five provinces
under the restive Muslim autonomous region in the South. (Mindanao Examiner)
