National Police Chief Debold Sinas
said the gunman and his group attacked policemen trying to serve arrest
warrants on several people wanted on various criminal charges, including the killings
of Mabuhay Vice Mayor Restituto
Calonge and Engineer Edgar Pampanga on February 26.
The
gunman was only identified by his alias as Jenal,
a member of a criminal group called Anwar Ansang operating in Zamboanga
Peninsula, and was being linked to the killings of Calonge and Pampanga who
were shot in a daring attack at a crowded area in the
municipal ground during a health program.
Sinas said several gang members managed to escape and among them were Ermahudin Manguda, Al-Muag and Maide Balugtod Zulueta. He said police forces recovered a .45-caliber pistol and a magazine with 8 bullets.
No other details were made available by the police or whether the killing of Calonge was politically motivated or not. Calonge’s family did not release any statement to the press.
The killings
occurred ahead of the October registration of politicians who are running for
next year’s local and national polls. Elections are traditionally bloody and
violent in the South. (Mindanao Examiner)
