PH to export 66K MT raw sugar to US

THE PHILIPPINES is set to export 66,000 metric tons (MT) of raw sugar to the United States during the crop year 2024-2025, according to the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).

This came after the SRA approved the exportation of the said volume under Sugar Order (SO) 5, which was signed Wednesday to fulfill its obligations under the US Raw Sugar Tariff-Rate Quota World Trade Allocation.

“This shall be the 1st Export of Farmers' Share Raw Sugar in fulfillment of the US Sugar Quota Allocation for the Year 2025 in order to participate in future Import Programs,” SO 5 reads, marking it as the second straight year to fulfill the farmers’ share for raw sugar quota to the US.

The said volume of 2025 US sugar quota allocation will be opened to eligible participants who have already joined the SRA’s SO 2, which was the first voluntary purchase totaling 120,000 MT.

Eligible entities must submit to the SRA a written and notarized undertaking stating their actual volume of raw sugar export for the 2025 US sugar quota allocation on or before March 30.

The raw sugar, meanwhile, must be exported from the Philippines no later than Aug. 15.

Moreover, eligible players who comply with the SRA's set terms and conditions will be “given priority in future government programs for sugar importation.”

The priority for importation privileges, however, will be granted to qualified participants in SO 2, to be followed by those in SO 5.

The transfer of privileges under SO 5, meanwhile, may be done to eligible transferees provided the approval of the SRA Administrator alongside their good standing as licensed SRA international sugar traders. (Stephanie Sevillano)
