THE COMMANDER that once orchestrated the operation to overrun the lair of communist terrorist group in a village now known as “Sitio Tapayanon”, has relinquished his post.
In the turnover rites yesterday afternoon, 10th Infantry “Agila” Division commander, Major General Jose C. Faustino Jr appreciated Lt. Col Gilbert Ombos “for his exceptional leadership and managerial acumen” in running the 60th Infantry “Mediator” Battalion.
“Worthy to note among LTC (Lt. Col) Ombos’ accomplishments in his stint is the discovery of the geographically isolated and disadvantaged Ata-Manobo village of Tapayanon,” he said in his message as the keynote speaker of the turn-over rites of Ombos to incoming 60th IB commander Lt. Col Ronaldo Sarmiento.
Faustino highly regarded such accomplishment of Ombos as the village is located at the tri-boundary of Davao del Norte, Bukidnon and Agusan del Sur, “significantly providing the unit an avenue to pilot the implementation of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s Executive Order No. 70.
On top of institutionalizing the whole of government approach in Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC), Ombos' leadership of the 6oth IB provided crucial support to intelligence-led law enforcement operation resulting in the neutralization of two high-ranking CNTS.
“Your sterling record is beyond reproach,” Faustino said of Ombos.
While lauding Ombos whom he revealed to soon take the U3 position of Eastern Mindanao Unified Command, Faustino equally heaped on incoming commander Sarmiento credentials citing him as “marked with distinction and fulfillment”.
“I have high hopes and expectations that he will continue to bring glory and maintain the legacy of 60IB,” Faustino said referring to Sarmiento.
“My guidance as your division commander is quite simple—take charge and carry on,” he told Sarmiento who formerly was the executive officer of 1003rd Infantry “Raptor” Brigade.
The General assured the officers, men and women of the 60th IB that “your unit will remain in good hands under the new commander” whom he expressed high regard for.
He, however, urged them keep up the good work and to fully support the new 60th IB commander “as you supported the former one.”
Alongside his declaration of trust and confidence for the outgoing and incoming commanders, Faustino thanked local government executives, private and civic partners, the media and the youth sectors for their support and collaboration with the 60th IB.
Among the LCEs present during the event were Davao del Norte Provincial Governor Edwin I. Jubahib, Davao del Norte 2nd District Congressman Alan Dujali, Davao de Oro 2nd District Congressman Ruwell Peter Gonzaga. (By Jeanevive Abangan)
