'No ID, No Entry’ in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA CITY continues to implement a tighter security to ensure peace and order following lifting of martial law in the whole of Southern Philippines.

Mayor Beng Climaco ordered security forces to ensure public safety and not give terrorists the opportunity to sow fear. The City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) to which Climaco currently heads also decided to continue the strict implementation of the “No ID, No Entry” policy in Zamboanga.

Because of the security policy, all provincial buses entering Zamboanga are being searched in police and military checkpoints to ensure that no weapons or explosives were being smuggled into the city. Passengers are also asked to get off the bus and show their identification cards as part of the security measures to prevent lawless elements from entering Zamboanga.

Police patrols also continue in many areas in Zamboanga with army soldiers deployed in remote barangays.

Elmeir Apolinario, head of the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, suggested to the CPOC to level up the local security plan for airport, seaport and bus terminal, taking into consideration the present threats to global security.

Apolinario suggested the city’s security plan must now include responses to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive threats, not only terrorism and hostage-taking incidents.

Just this month, security forces intercepted a dozen members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) who were on their way to Sulu province to put up a camp. The men arrived on a bus from Zamboanga del Sur province.

Because of the tight security, policemen and soldiers managed to stop the MNLF members from going to Sulu and told them to return to Zamboanga del Sur. The group said their trip was approved by MNLF chairman Nur Misuari, who is facing criminal charges for the deadly 2013 Zamboanga siege. (Zamboanga Post)
