AN ARMED drug suspect died in an alleged shootout with a joint team of anti-narcotics operatives and Army personnel during a law enforcement operation in Sultan sa Barongis, Maguindanao, on Monday.
Lt. Col. Rogelio Gabi, commander of the Army’s 40th Infantry Battalion, said suspect Podzak Akmad Mopak resisted arrest and fired first at the team consisting of 40IB troopers and personnel of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Region.
During the 3 p.m. buy-bust operation in Barangay Angkayamat, Gabi said Mopak tried to escape while firing on the authorities, forcing them to return fire and wounding him.
Gabi said the law enforcement team administered first aid and rushed Mopak to the Buluan District Hospital in Buluan town, where he died an hour later.
No one was hurt on the government side during the shootout.
“Mopak is a known drug peddler in Sultan sa Barongis, Maguindanao,” Gabi said, adding the suspect had two standing warrants of arrest for illegal drugs and illegal possession of firearms.
The Army official added that Mopak suspect was listed as one of the most wanted persons in the neighboring Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat. (By Noel Punzalan)
