KIDAPAWAN
CITY – The St. Louis Hospital in the southern Philippine city of Tacurong
condemned the attack on its personnel by villagers who suspected him of being
infected with the deadly coronavirus disease.
It said the
victim was ganged up by 5 people near a market in the neighboring town of
President Quirino and splashed bleach on his face. The hospital employee was on
his work to work when the incident occurred on Friday. He was able to seek
medical treatment immediately after the attack.
It was not
immediately known whether villagers were arrested or not, or if they have all
gone into hiding, but the hospital said it is demanding justice for the victim,
who is the family’s lone breadwinner.
“Our
personnel is a breadwinner, as many of our frontlines are, who in the present
pandemonium, chose to bravely continue their duties to the community. They
remained unfazed by the discrimination that healthcare workers now face on a
daily basis,” St. Louis Hospital said Saturday.
It said the
incident was reported to the police.
“At this
time, we respectfully demand that justice be given. He is a frontliner. Instead
of discriminating the healthcare workers, to the point of committing untold
violence against them, we, as a community show solidarity with these
individuals who risk their lives so that continued medical service remain
unhampered. We demand justice for our healthcare personnel. He heeded the call
of duty when others would not,” it added.
The name of
the victim was not made public either by the police or the hospital. (With a report
from Rhoderick BeƱez.)
