OFFICERS OF the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) will give up a portion of their salaries to help fund government response efforts to contain coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Speaking at a Laging Handa briefing on Monday, BJMP Community Relations Services head, Jail Chief Insp. Xavier Solda said all workers of the BJMP's 468 jails all over the country have decided to give 1.5 percent of their base pay which will be donated to anti-Covid-19 efforts of the government.
"This is about PHP7.23 million, this will help our Bayanihan efforts," Solda said.
At present, the BJMP has 14,875 personnel manning jails where persons with pending criminal cases are detained.
After conviction, persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) are transferred to prisons run by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCOr).
As of Monday, Solda said there are no Covid-19 cases among PDLs in BJMP's jails while 21 individuals have been placed under isolation for health observation.
The BJMP likewise said it plans to implement a jail lockdown to prevent infections and has also adopted a system where PDLs may avail of online visitation.
"Meron tayong electronic dalaw na ma-maintain natin ang connection ng ating mga PDL at kamag-anak na nasa labas (We have electronic visitations where our PDLs can maintain their connection with relatives outside of prisons)," Solda said.
Aside from adherence to social distancing guidelines and daily disinfection, Solda said they regularly monitor the condition of PDLs " to check on their morale and mental health concerns". (By Benjamin Pulta)
