Zamboanga man tests positive for coronavirus

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Philippine health authorities said a 41-year old man has been tested positive for the novel coronavirus, or Covid-19, in Zamboanga City and is now under medical care.
The patient, who comes from the village of Calarian, is the 8th Covid case here since the local government imposed a strict community quarantine in March following the outbreak of the deadly virus in the country.

Little details were made available by the Department of Health about the latest Covid case, but Mayor Beng Climaco said contact tracing has begun in an effort to know whether the man has infected other family members or friends.

“He is now confined at the Zamboanga City Medical Center and is in stable condition,” she said.

The Zamboanga City Medical Center said the man was admitted April 7 for acute gastroenteritis with moderate dehydration and hypertensive urgency” and later tested positive for the coronavirus.

Just over the weekend, Climaco announced that a 29-year old man tested positive for Covid-19 was released from hospital after a dramatic recovery from the deadly respiratory disease. He was the first Covid-19 positive in Zamboanga.

She said the patient, who is a resident of Sinunuc village, was tested anew and results showed he is now negative for Covid-19 infection. “Great news on Easter Sunday. ZP-01, Zamboanga City’s first confirmed Covid case, has tested negative and has been discharged today,” she said.

Climaco also praised the medical team who took care and aided the patient throughout his isolation at a hospital here after being screened for the virus on March 16 when he showed mild symptoms of the respiratory disease.
“Our warmest felicitations to ZP-01 and our sincerest gratitude to the medical team who took care and aided ZP-01 on his recovery. With ZP-01’s recovery, we pray and look forward to the same positive outcomes for our other cases. Let us continue working together to win the battle against Covid,” she said.

Climaco also handed over personal protective equipment - gowns, N95 face masks, boots and boots cover, among others - to the Zamboanga City Medical Center. They were donated to the local government by the people of GuiCang City in China. She said GuiCang is a sister city of Zamboanga. (Zamboanga Post)
