SULU – An Abu Sayyaf militant surrendered to the security officials in the southern
Philippine province of Sulu where military operations continue against the
pro-ISIS group.
Officials said Mawallil
Sayyadi, a native of Parang town, yielded an automatic rifle and a grenade
launcher, including ammunition when he surrendered to the 100th
Infantry Battalion in Indanan town.
“This is a result of our
relentless operations where the group suffered numerous casualties. Other
members now fear for their lives, leading to the series of surrenders,” Maj. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, commander of the anti-terror Joint Task Sulu, said Tuesday.
Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana,
chief of the military’s Western Mindanao Command, urged other members of the
terrorist group to surrender peacefully. “We are working together with all our
partners and stakeholders to destroy the terrorist groups in our area of
operation. We want to end all conflicts to pave way for peace and development
especially in the island province of Sulu,” he said.
A recent
fighting in Patikul town killed 11 soldiers and wounded 14 more, but one of
them died in the hospital. Security forces launched a massive campaign following
the deadly battle.
